New Zealand establishes Nuclear Free Zone
On June 8, 1987, the government of New Zealand passed the
New Zealand Nuclear Free Zone, Disarmament, and Arms Control Act
, which barred ships that are powered by nuclear energy or carry nuclear weapons from entering the country's territorial waters.
